This was My Life – 1994

If you wanna read more about the idea and thought with this article series, read the first post HERE. Just to clarify – the order of the albums is not a toplist but instead ordered from A to Z.

1994 is another year in a streak of magnificent years for metal music. A lot of immortal classics saw the light of day – or how about titles such as “Tales from the Thousand Lakes”, “The Principle of Evil Made Flesh”, “Purgatory Afterglow”, “In the Nightside Eclipse”, “Soulless”, Opus Nocturne”, “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas”, “Burn My Eyes”, “Far Beyond Driven”, “Lunar Strain” and more…..

Some bands formed in 1994:

  • Ayreon
  • Deströyer 666
  • Dødheimsgard
  • Hatebreed
  • Lacuna Coil
  • Rammstein
  • Scarve
  • Six Feet Under
  • Strapping Young Lad
  • Symphony X
  • Vintersorg

Some events during 1994:

  • Kurt Cobain of NIRVANA commits suicide on April 5.
  • Ralf Scheepers leaves Gamma Ray.

MY TOP 10 FOR 1994:

AMORPHIS– ”TALES FROM THE THOUSAND LAKES”
Relapse Records
1994 [September 1]

The keyboard intro to “Black Winter Day” is a true classic. Brilliant Finnish tunes and melodies weaved in a quilt of death metal.

-

-

CRADLE OF FILTH – ”THE PRINCIPLE OF EVIL MADE FLESH”
Cacophonous Records
1994 [Februrary 24]

CRADLE OF FILTH, with their crust-influenced black metal, introduced something totally new to the market. Never really bought the romantic gothic vampire theme, but as far as CoF being trendsetters there is no doubt about it.

-

DARK FUNERAL – ”DARK FUNERAL”
Hellspawn Records
1994 [May 4]

As the album above, DARK FUNERALs sound was something a bit different and a welcomed breath of fresh air in the black metal scene. Blackmoon (R.I.P)/Ahriman-combo sure knew how to cook’em riffs.

-

EDGE OF SANITY – ”PURGATORY AFTERGLOW”
Black Mark Production
1994 [October 1]

Perhaps not the best album from the band but still a brilliant album with classics such as “Twilight”, “Blood-Colored” and the more gothic sounding “Black Tears”.

-

EMPEROR – ”IN THE NIGHTSIDE ECLIPSE”
Candlelight Records
1994 [February 21]

Even though I still prefer the EMPEROR/ENSLAVED split, this is truly a must-have album for everyone that claims to listen to black metal. EMPEROR truly set a new standard for black metal music with great musicianship with “In the Nightside Eclipse”.

-

GRAVE – ”SOULLESS”
Century Media
1994 [June 1]

As classic as the intro-drumming on JUDAS PRIEST’s “Painkiller” track is for heavy metal, as classic is the beginning of the track “Soulless” for death metal.

-

MACHINE HEAD– ”BURN MY EYES”
Roadrunner Records
1994 [June 1]

Classic post-thrash/groove metal album with classics such as “Davidian” and “Old” along with some awesome drumming from Chris Kontos. Let freedom ring with a shotgun blast!!!

-

-

MARDUK – ”OPUS NOCTURNE”
Osmose Productions
1993 [December 1]

The best Swedish black metal album of all time. Why I was disappointed when I first got the album is still one of the biggest mysteries in my life. This album is just 100% black metal perfection!

MAYHEM – ”DE MYSTERIIS DOM SATHANAS”
Deathlike Silence Productions
1994 [May 24]

Just like with “Opus Nocturne” this was a big disappointment when I first heard it, why was no mystery though. What was up with them vocals? Nothing it seemed…pure brilliance.

-

-

PANTERA– ”FAR BEYOND DRIVEN”
EastWest Records
1994 [March 22]

As far as groove metal goes, this is its crown jewel. “Far Beyond Driven” is fully packed with hit after hit delivered with an energy that few have possessed (not even the band themselves).
